long way off, first warning

people complain to me that i dont warn them well nuff in advance of rides that are coming up. so, mark yer calendars: oct 20th, 65 mile mixed surface ride up here in beautiful state college. details to come but at least mark that say and maybe the next one if you want to drink beer while lolling around my house. all are welcome, even John, who brings bad juju but only bad juju for himself. (two broken frames in 1 year?) i am gunna try to get starmer to make a seperate web site for it so you dont have to dig around in here to find info.

ramble_web_2.jpg

last year’s ride was good, and i have eliminated 99 percent of all roads over 45mph.

daniel is making a re-appearance as the west coast guy who drank a bottle of rum and lot of cheap beer, puked twice in the driveway, rolled outta bed 2 minutes before the ride started the next day, stuffed a polaroid camera, a hat, gloves, a vest, arm warmers and food into his jersey pockets, rode a mexican colnago with a loose stem, 3 sizes too small, fixed, on a 46/16 gearing, and didnt pee the entire ride and still beat everyone up the hills.

hopefully starmer is making his reappearance as the guy who needs walking shoes.

cory wont be there, as the fund to fly him out here never really took off, but maybe someone new to the ride will come.

  1. Dudes,

I’ll mark my calendar. I have been thinking about coming back to PA in Oct. anyway. I’d love to get in on the ride. I’ll need a bike to borrow though.

  2. I had no idea you were in State College. That’s where my wife is from. Her family is in Boalsburg now and we’re around all the time. I’ll drop you a note next time and maybe we can do a RocBike/Ride Lugged ride.

  3. Shaun, what size bike do you normally ride?
Jason, awesome, it’ll be good. My normal riding group is some older guys (ok they are just old) from Boalsburg called the ‘Boalsburg bikers’. They are really fast for any age, I can barely keep up on ye ole touring bike. Downside: they arnt into dirt roads or fire roads, which there are tons of. Also, not into drinking beer after rides.

  4. mmmmmaybe. I guess it all depends on what is broken around then.

  5. john, did you have to send the quickbeam back to rivendell? maybe damien could throw a new seattube on it…

  6. i’m putting it on the calendar for rob and me. i think we’ll leave hutch and the trailer home for this one. is mel coming? the spoke card or whatever shows hair flying in the wind. that is either nick (is he coming from sweden?) or an archetypal representation of girlhood, which is really quaint since neither mel or i have long hair. anyhoo, what gives, mel?

  7. Christine, i think leaving the boy at home is a good idea.
this ride has some hills. read: the last ride was super flat in comparison. do some training rides up on fishing creek rd and ect. its all doable and fun, its just not an easy ride. we break for lunch, twice, not to mention photo ops and water breaks. mel is coming if you are. the poster is adapted from a miyata 80s poster, which was a japanese bike company. as everyone knows, girls didnt have short hair until 1993, so this is a historical document, not to be confused with our current state of affairs. nick is not coming back for this, he barely survived the last ramble, basically refusing to use his low gears and making his eyes pop out trying to climb it all in the big ring. speaking of which: you need low gears for this. a 26 granny and 30 big cog would be ideal.

  8. and at least 28mm tires, while we’re at it. 32s would be perfect. and spare tubes. and a fucking frame pump why do mel and i have the only frame pumps people? they are good for waving at dogs, sticking in fast people’s spokes and pumping tires with. blackburn makes the best, its worth the special order wait, even though its kinda ugly and heavy.

  9. johnson – it’s joe from pgh again. the guy who bought yer rigida rims, but hasn’t built ‘em yet…

hell yes i’d love to join you all, if outsiders are welcome! got hooked on your/this blog a while back and have been lurking since.

i’ll even bring my zefal frame pump.

  10. joe, all are welcome. thats how ya meet new people right?
house and lawn is open to sleep in/on friday before the ride and or saturday after the ride, but bring a sleeping bag and mat…

lurk away, but comment more often.

we’ll have more details on the ride as it approaches, so stay posted.

also: old hpx with the aluminum housing or the new plasticy one? i got a hpx (old) at yard sale for free, and just to give zephal a fair shake against the blackburn i bought a new one too. its not that its a bad pump (the new one) its just that its not as good as the blackburn. the old one was great in a it doubles as a billy club/baseball bat/candlestick holder ugly black heavy french kinda way. curiously the old lapize pumps (still made i think) work like shit with presta valves but work great with shraeder. too bad they need dedicated pump pegs: they are very light and look the best of all…also, harris sells them for peanuts.

  11. The QB is waiting in it’s box for me to ship. I suspect they’ll just replace, but I don’t know. You’re not the only one with a frame pump, they’re just a little more rare.

  12. i know you have a frame pump john, but yer damn frame is so big it looks like a mini pump.

  13. Yeah, I’m going. Fo sho.

  14. obviously mel designed the poster–it’s quite good.

i’ll bring a frame pump, and then beat your hairy legs with it

    i’ll think about joining you

did a vermont loop of the d2r2 yesterday–28 miles took us 2.5 hours. ugh.

    xo
