s24o: october 4th

lets do one.  the weekend of the 4th.  saturday nite.  start in frederick, head up to the shed, poach a camping spot, eat some grub, pass out, wake up, drink coffee, go back to frederick.s24o-announcement.jpg

who’s interested?  we have some but not a ton of spare camping gear, including an ok bag, a sleeping mat, a tent.

FLASH:  here are some details-  i gotta work saturday.  let’s leave at 6pm from my casbah, 5 east 7th st, fred md 21701.   yes that means bring a headlight and tail light.  it will be bright enough for the first part of the ride, but we’ll be heading up into the woods in the darkness.  no worries, but a light will be nessesary.  I might have 1 spare if someone needs one.  i bet other folks have spares too.  bring a headlamp, ala a petzl, to hunt for fire wood.  a flask o’ booze isnt a bad idea either.  memorize at least one ghost story and one old timey camp song.

  1. Why the hell is it 35 miles? I don’t have time for that. I have parent/teacher conferences that next week. Shit. Can I park a car somewhere and make my ride shorter?
I’ll carry the tea kettle! I’ll need a cuppa.

  2. er. that was mel not me.

  3. Mel - I will be breaking camp early AM and rolling straight back to town to take care of the pet, so if you want company and need to keep it short, let me know. Depending on where we plant our tent stakes it shouldn’t be more than 15 miles of mostly downhill riding.

And I’ll have a coffee press if that helps.

  4. mel has retracted her earlier statement, once she realized it was 35 miles all told, not each way. and coffee ALWAYS helps
    ….

  5. Sounds like a great time, I’m in. I have plenty of camping gear, the trick will be ridding with it!

  6. John, does your rig have eyelets for a rear rack? even if it doesnt, we can set something up. shoot me an email and we can set up a time to figure it out if you want.

  7. Longtime listener, first-time caller poster. I forget how I first found this blog, but I’ve enjoyed following it. I’ve been wanting to camp in the Watershed for a while. If you’d want a random-ass bike nerd along, I’d love to come. Is any of the RideLugged diaspora coming to Frederick from inside or near the Beltway? Not that riding to Frederick from here is impossible…

  8. aj, no one that i know of is heading that way. and the train only runs weekdays, otherwise that would be perfect.

we’d love to have you. probally leave around 6 pm. you’ll need a head light and a blinky.

    cheers.

  9. Another lurker-turned-poster here. Wish I could join but I have tickets to see David Sedaris at GWU that evening. Speaking of which, I’m right down 7th street from you all, across from the dairy bottling place. Nice to know you’re so close by.

  10. all these lurkers. kinda has me creeped out. which is why i moved into the basement and barricaded the doors with empty oil drums.

I’m sure we’ll get you out on another ride alyssa. right after i remove these oil drums…

  11. I would come if I lived nearby. Strange….I don’t know anyone in Chicago that’s into this.

  12. i hear if you start a blog, you can find people.

you don’t stand still well do you?

  14. but is it a4nic8tor or nick as in a nick we only just met and may or may not enjoy dress shirts and walmart jeans and dunkin donuts…

  15. aha.. welcome another Nick. good luck with riding in the dress shirts and tight jeans!

  16. I will likely head up, but may not leave frnx till dark. Take a flare gun so’s I can finds ya.

  17. Alex, even 6 isnt late enough? I’ll try to figure out the exact location. maybe we can build a giant pyramid of PBR cans to point the way. A giant flaming pyramid…

  18. Might be. I have friends coming to town for In the Streets, and I’m not sure how long they’re going to stick around.

  19. well, ok. i’ll work on that pyramid. we’ll have a fire, and someone outta have a cell fone. maybe joe.

  20. In the streets…..?
Good god, what a great night to escape the haze of drunkness in the city with a fog of drunkness up in yonder hills…
    I’m in.

  21. Hey nothing is more fun than thinking its a good idea to ride solo to an undisclosed location at 10pm with 40lbs of gear on your back after drinking heavily and listening to bad 80’s music.

  22. It was good.

  23. It was a lot of fun. Thanks to James for rigging up the rack and Mel for sewing the awesome panniers! I have some photos up at flickr.com/photos/john_switzer/, unfortunately my camera died in the morning, just as we were getting ready to ride.

  24. Ah, school. Destroyer of fun. Maybe next time, you guys seem pretty cool.
Maybe Dirty Ferry :) It’d be interesting to see how my 700cx25 tires handle THAT…
